Every coin you donated in a past season is returned in the next one. The coins are released in drops, a percentage of your balance each time, so the economy of the new season is not flooded on the first day.

Drops are delivered by the game itself when you log in and every few minutes while you play. A drop that is already due when your balance is set is delivered at once.
Promotion tokens and heirloom points.
For every 1000 coins returned you receive 1 Promotion Token. What does not reach 1000 is kept and counts toward the next token. Heirloom points follow the same schedule.

!drops shows your next drops, !points shows the heirloom points and progression milestones your character has earned and !heirloom shows the heirloom points received this season.
